The key to implementing a successful SEO strategy is patience.

It might be frustrating to hear, but SEO takes time. You cannot expect results overnight regarding your business’s Google rankings.

Sometimes, a company may shoot to the top of the SERPs almost immediately using black hat SEO tactics (ones that cheat the system!), but this isn’t feasible. They will drop back down into the abyss of Google just as quickly as they came.

Focusing on putting into action an effective and high-quality on-page and off-page strategy is the best way to go. It may take your business a few weeks to reach the first page of search results, or it may take months, but you cannot rush the process.

There are many reasons why some sites may rank better than others, like the strength of a domain, the backlink profile of a domain and the domain name’s relevancy. These are all valuable things to consider when buying domains; however, once your business starts to rank and you see the results you have dreamed of, rankings can still fluctuate daily. You are, essentially, at Google’s mercy.

Many panics when their SERP positions drop, but this shouldn’t be your initial reaction. We will outline why your rankings may chop and change to emphasise that ranking fluctuations are not something to fret about daily.

Ranking factors are entirely out of your control, so don’t let them rule your life!

Why are your rankings fluctuating?

Positioning in SERPs

If your business hasn’t yet reached the first page or one of the top positions for your desired search terms, you should be prepared for more fluctuation in where you appear in the search results. Sites that appear lower than around the fourth position are not as stable as those in the first few results.

As a result of this, any minor changes that you make to your site and/or SEO strategy at this stage will have a much more significant impact on your rankings. For this reason, it is arguably more important to keep your site updated with fresh and high-quality content when ranking in the teens or even further down to increase your chances of shooting further up.

Therefore, conversely, if your site has reached one of the top few positions and has maintained its ranking for a prolonged period (congratulations), the small changes you make to your site will have far less of an impact.

If your business reaches one of the top rankings but drops again shortly after, don’t panic – it isn’t easy to compete with companies that have consistently appeared in the top three. You will get there eventually with time, hard work and patience. We would say that if you have held a leading position for several months, but you are still fluctuating regularly, that would be the time to take a closer look at the potential cause of the movement.

Topics

As well as your current rankings affecting the regularity of your fluctuations, your content’s topic(s) and your business type can also influence you.

When it comes to business type, the product/service that you offer may be somewhat temporal. For example, a professional gardening service would naturally receive far more website traffic during the warmer seasons, like spring and summer. Hence, their rankings may reflect this. Google aims to show people exactly what they want to see regarding relevancy and accessibility – significantly fewer people will be browsing for gardeners when it is freezing outside.

If you make sure that you are aware of your business’ potential peak and off-peak times of the year, you can be mentally and practically prepared for the changes to your Google rankings.

Even if your business’ products/services are in demand all year round, the topics of the content published on your site may affect your rankings. There are always new trends going on, and whilst it is impossible to keep up with them all, if your business posts relevant content relating to a current trend, it can affect your rankings to a significant extent. It is easy to identify the search results affected by popularity and current events as Google will include a time and date of publication next to these. If one of your pages has a date/time next to it, you should expect it to fluctuate more than others due to the nature of the content.

Google Algorithms

Sometimes, changes in rankings have nothing to do with your actions. Google makes minor changes to their algorithms practically every day for improvements, so these will affect your position in the SERPs at some point. Due to the nature of Google’s ever-changing algorithms, we highly recommend monitoring your rankings weekly rather than daily. This way, you can identify any significant drops or improvements that have stayed consistent rather than getting caught up on daily small fluctuations.

As well as Google making small regular changes, they will implement a large-scale update every now and then. You may have heard of their Panda, Penguin or Hummingbird updates, which rock the boat once they are put into play. When this happens, you shouldn’t throw your existing SEO strategy out the window – take the time to understand any new ranking factors and update your site accordingly. It is impossible to avoid some fluctuations due to these Google updates.

Content and links

Your site’s content is what Google uses to deem whether you are legitimate and offer browsers quality information. Therefore, regularly uploading fresh and valuable content is a great way to boost your rankings. When new content is added, Google bots will crawl it to determine its relevance and where your site deserves to rank. On the flip side, if you upload poor, un-optimised content, the overall quality of your site and rankings will suffer. Don’t upload any content you aren’t proud of to your site.

As much as the uploading of new content affects your current rankings, removing old content also plays a role. It is a great idea to audit all the content on your site to identify any that may need updating. You should never rush into removing old content, though; even if it’s not up to your current standard, it may rank due to age. We would suggest identifying all the pages on your site ranking. Once you’ve done this, edit them so they are fully optimised and reflect your business goals.

The same goes for links – if you add quality links to your site and remove broken links, your rankings will most likely improve.

Competitors

Occasionally, your site’s rankings may be pushed further up or down the SERPs due to one of your competitors doing the opposite. We can’t all take first place – understanding this will help you to keep a level head when you are kicked from your top spot temporarily.

Fluctuations may be due to existing competitors moving up or down or result from a new keyword competitor making an appearance. There will always be competition – your business should stick to your effective ongoing SEO strategy rather than panicking and trying to change things in a hurry to compete.

Although competitors for your desired search terms may frustrate you regarding their rankings, they can give you peace of mind when you see your rankings change suddenly. If your close competitors are experiencing fluctuations too, you know the changes result from external factors and not your actions.

You can also learn from your competitors by analysing their ranking pages and updating your pages to go above and beyond what they offer. As well as doing some on-page competitor analysis, don’t forget to delve into the backlink profile of your competitors to see which types of links you are missing and build them accordingly!

Although this is not an exhaustive list of reasons why your rankings can regularly fluctuate, hopefully, it has shown that moving up and down the SERPs is not always a bad thing. Any small or big change you make to your site or Google’s algorithm will have an effect, so panicking when you see changes is, quite frankly, a waste of time.

We recommend taking a closer look at your site if many of your pages drop simultaneously over a prolonged period and calling us if you have any queries.

The task of choosing a domain name can be overwhelming. It’s like opening a box of chocolates with various flavours, textures and tastes. They all look inviting in their own unique ways, but which one to go for?

Your domain name is your identity on the web. You want to make sure that you choose a name that is not only relatable to your business but is memorable and easy to promote.

Domain names have a massive impact on click-through rates all across the web, on social media, type-in searches, brandability and offline advertising. There’s a huge risk in picking a domain name for your business.

Here are some rules to follow to ensure you select the right domain name:

1) Make it brandable.

Brandable means that when you see a name, instinctively, you relate it to that business. Hyphens, capitals, and strange variations of a brand name can confuse readers and make them question the direction of a URL.

Let’s say our business was selecting a domain name for the first time:

www.marketing-online.co.uk is directly related to marketing (with key terms included). However, it would be hard to brand, say, or remember. Google may also flag this as a spammy tactic used to rank for ‘online marketing’ keywords.

www.Big-foot-digital.co.uk does include the name of our business and is unique, but is quite challenging to say.

www.bigfootdigital.co.uk is perfect because it’s easy to say and remember and is highly brandable.

2) Use keywords.

Sorry. I know we’re making things confusing, but stick with me. Using keywords in your domain name does sometimes give you a boost in the rankings. This works well if your business name features keywords you want to rank for. Only then can you get away with including them in your domain name, as it’s highly brandable.

Take our domain of ours, www.londonseoagency.com. Our brand name is the London SEO Agency. This makes link building, keyword research and optimisation far easier. When building links for this as a new domain, it’s possible to vary the anchor text while still using our chosen keywords:

londonseoagency.com
www.londonseoagency.com
londonseoagency

However…

Keyword-rich domains have trained Google and searchers to be suspicious. They are seen as a direct attempt to rank for chosen keywords. If you make it clear that your brand name is your keyword, don’t worry. Otherwise, steer well clear of this as an optimisation technique. It doesn’t hold the same weight as it once did.

3) Keep it short

The shorter the domain name, the better.

Shorter names are easier to read, pronounce and spell. These URLs don’t need to be shortened for social media sharing and search results. This will help create a smooth user journey for your audience. People won’t have to use a shortened URL that will potentially confuse them and leave them unsure about the domain name of your website.

4) Opt for a .com domain

There are many TLD extension options these days. We still prefer using .com or .co.uk where possible. These extensions are most frequently found in the search results. Therefore, people are used to seeing them. If you want to build a brandable domain that is instantly recognisable, always go for .com.

Because .com domains are the most common, they are often taken. Keep in mind your chosen domain name. The name you want may not be available with the .com TLD, so it’s a case of weighing up the strength of the options available.

5) Avoid trademark infringement.

It’s not always a case of whether your domain name is confused. It’s more about whether a company could take legal action against you for selecting a domain name owned by another.

Do your research before hitting ‘buy now.’ Don’t select a domain name easily recognised as another company. For starters, it’s not great for the brandability of your business. And second, well, you could end up in a lot of trouble with the law, and that sucks.

We hope this has cleared up some common questions surrounding domain name selection. Don’t forget to bring up the topic of domain name selection with your consultant on your next call.

What marketing strategies should you focus on this year? Here, we will discuss the top ranking Google website factors that will REALLY make a difference.

Authoritative and relevant backlinks.

Of course, powerful backlinks remain Google’s top ranking factor. A strong link-building strategy will really work in your favour – without it, you’ll lose out on your chances of ranking at all, especially if you’re a business just starting out.

However, you need to do it correctly to have your desired impact. Think about these different ways you can improve your current link-building strategy:

Asking your content to be included in a roundup – posts that include content and opinions from niche-specific professionals.

Write up genuine case studies.

Provide free content or tools for people to use.

Create infographics.

Of course, if you don’t have the right content to link to, it will be difficult to secure a decent backlink. Always ensure you create engaging, informative content that people will love linking to.

Mobile responsive.

After Google’s mobile-first update in 2018, mobile optimisation remains a top ranking factor. This means that Google now favours sites optimised for mobile search over all overs. With a high percentage of web searches coming from a mobile device, ensuring your website is responsive on different devices is increasingly important.

User experience.

Your site architecture is becoming increasingly important. Not only is it crucial to help potential customers find what they need easier, but it also helps search engine crawlers find more pages.

A website should be super simple to use and navigate around. In fact, it should take a customer 3 or 4 clicks at the most to find what they are looking for on a site. If they can’t after this time, they’ll inevitably press the back button and begin their search again elsewhere.

Also, by having clearly visible call-to-action buttons and updated content, you’ll be able to see an increase in users staying on your site for longer, as well as an increase in page views. Regularly updated content works wonders (which is why having a blog is a great idea).

Keep your website secure.

Back in 2017, Google’s Chrome browser began to flag up those sites that weren’t secure in the URL bar. Having a secure site gives you much more chance of keeping a customer on your site. You can say goodbye to your next sale when they see that “Not secure” URL bar.

Google will now favour secure sites over those that aren’t, meaning that you risk being wiped from search results altogether if your site isn’t.

Quality content.

Stuffing your content with unnatural keywords may temporarily work, but you will eventually be found out by Google, who will then take action to remove you from search results.

The quality of your page content and your blog is actually still an important factor where SEO is concerned. Optimised copy for the right keywords holds great power regarding your rankings. You need to create pages of value, not only for your customers but to show Google you mean business.

Know what your customers are searching for before you make any content changes. All your content may need could be a bit of optimisation for the right keyword or a new article on a topic. Optimised content helps Google place you in the right position in the search results.

For any business looking to rise to the top of the search results, understanding the process of ranking and what Google is looking for is essential.

We’re not just talking about the here and now of SEO. It has been a decade now since Google started improving the quality of search. While the majority of these changes are indispensable, some are real game changers.

So today, we’re going to step through some of the most remarkable Google algorithm updates and explain how to adapt your marketing strategy to be prepared for them:

Panda (2011):

The very first update that shook the SEO world and started the white-hat revolution was the Panda algo update. In a nutshell, Panda was introduced to locate and downrank websites that produced low-quality, spammy content. The main culprits were those who used keyword stuffing to rise to the top of the search results. Though, back then everyone pretty much used this tactic. Think about it this way; Google sets the rules. We simply have to move with the times or face being dropped from the search results altogether.
Watch out for:

Thin content.

Duplicate content.

User-generated spam.

Irrelevant content.

What to do:
The best way to identify any of these errors is through a site audit. Since Panda is not limited to certain pages, it’s crucial that you cover everything. It may be an article you published some years ago but if it’s active online, it can still be crawled.

Using the industry-standard site crawler, Deepcrawl, will help locate any issues that may be holding you back. It’s a simple tool that requires you to enter your web address and hit ‘scan.’ From there, you will be presented with a report, and that’s where things get interesting.

Look for the issues mentioned above and take steps to rectify them. Some of them will require more attention than others. For example, duplicate content is one of the main reasons for a website to drop in the rankings. Google is quick to catch on.

If you do find duplicate content on your website, decide which page you want to rank in the search results. Don’t be tempted to just remove one, though. You need to check first in Google Analytics to see which page is bringing in the most organic traffic. It’s no good removing a page with the potential to generate new business.

The second option is to apply a rel=canonical tag to the page you want to rank in the search engines. The major difference between a canonical tag and a redirect is that a canonical tag is simply a hint to Google and not a directive.

Penguin (2012):

Following Panda, in 2012 Google launched Penguin which was aimed at down-ranking websites with manipulative, spammy links. The thing is, links have always been in the most powerful ranking factor. Before the update, however, Google could not determine the quality of a link. The search results were a battlefield with SEO’s buying links from anywhere. There was no quality control. Of course, this could not continue – so Penguin was introduced to scan every external and internal link to ensure they were relevant and authoritative.

Watch out for:

Over-optimised anchor text.

Links from spammy sites. Be aware that your competitors can point links at your site to outrank you. Google is working to find these links quicker so that you don’t have to disavow them.

Irrelevant links pointing to your site.

What to do:The very first thing to do when fighting spammy links is to get a complete list of backlinks pointing to your website. It’s important to keep in mind that while you may be building high-powered, relevant backlinks, others may not. They could be messing up your link building efforts by directing low-authority links to your pages.

Google is getting better at spotting manipulative links and is taking steps to remove them without the need for a disavow file. For now, however, we would always recommend using a tool, like Majestic SEO, to review your backlink profile in detail.

The next step is to identify toxic links. This is a manual process, and for a large site, it can take some time. From there, you can hand-select the links with a low trust score that are not relevant to your industry. These are the ones that can potentially harm your SEO efforts.

One of the safest ways to remove links is to contact the webmasters directly and ask them to remove the link. If they don’t reply, then it’s time to submit a disavow file with the help of Google’s disavow tool. It’s essential to consider every link in detail before submitting your file. The last thing you want is to disavow links that are sending traffic to your site and boosting your rankings. There’s a fine line, so always speak to a professional beforehand.

Hummingbird (2013) / RankBrain (2015)

Once Google established some order to its search results, it turned its attention to search intent. This is the understanding of why people use the keywords they do. Google rolled out the Hummingbird update in 2013 and later followed RankBrain in 2015. Both of these updates work to help better establish the meaning behind searches but operate in slightly different ways.

Hummingbird works to help establish the purpose of a search query and present relevant results to the searcher. Previously, Google used keywords alone to allocate places in the search results. Following the update, the combination of words and context are taken into consideration.

RankBrain is a machine learning software that helps better understand the logic behind certain search queries. It’s an addition to Hummingbird, which is based on previous search data. RankBrain will look at what a searcher typed into Google in connection with the results they clicked on to predict the search intent.

Watch out for:

Keyword stuffing.

Unnatural language.

Irrelevant content.

What to do:

If you are an old-school SEO’er, it’s time to change your ways. Using one broad keyword across your page will no longer result is higher rankings. You need to diversify your content with synonyms and LSI-keywords. This should be an easy task for a skilled content writer, as people tend to use these words naturally when writing.

Pigeon / Possum

For many years it was considerably difficult to rank for local search terms, especially when compared with the competition from national rivals. It wasn’t fair as some of the local search terms were incredibly relevant and presented more accurate results for local queries. For that reason, Google rolled out the Pigeon update in 2016 closely followed by the Possum two years later.

The launch of the Pigeon update was intended to bring local search results in line with the national ones. It was a major consideration when ranking local search results. This saw directory listings skyrocket to the top of the rankings. It also created more ties with Google Maps.

The Possum update was focused on ranking websites for local terms based on the searcher’s geographical location. It now means that if you’re close to a business, then it’s more likely to appear in the search results than a rival company 10 miles away! It’s just common sense.

Watch out for:

NAP consistency.

Google My Business optimisation.

Local SEO website optimisation.

What to do:

Optimise for local search: Now that Google is placing more relevance on local search results, it makes sense to capitalise on that search traffic. It’s a tactic that, to this day, many companies neglect. They are hell bent on ranking for broad keywords and forget the relevance of local search terms. Get ahead of the game by optimising your website to rank for local search terms. Creating separate landing pages for different locations nearby will increase your chances of ranking in the search results.

Set up Google My Business: If you want your site to be included in Google’s local index, a Google My Business page is a must. Make sure you categorise your listing with your services/products. It’s also important to keep your GMB consistent with any local directory listings or citations you build (which is an absolute must!)

Mobilegeddon (2015) / Mobile-First Indexing (2018):

The importance of mobile search started back in 2015 when Google released its first Mobile Friendly update. People were using their mobiles to search for local attractions, such as restaurants, theatres, pubs, parks, etc. The list goes on. To make for an improved mobile user experience, the mission became to up-rank websites that were optimised for mobile devices.

In 2018, we saw the Mobile-First algo update. This still causes a lot of confusion with companies. Mobile-First Indexing is not about rankings – it’s all about indexing. Search engines bots will crawl the mobile version of your site first.

Watch out for:

Lack of mobile optimisation.

What to do:

There will come a time when all websites are optimised for mobile searching. If didn’t receive a notification about mobile-first indexing in your Google Search Console account, then it means your site wasn’t re-indexed. The best thing to do would be to check your robots.txt file to ensure that all your pages are accessible to Google’s bots. You don’t want to restrict access to any important pages.

What Is A Citation On A Business Directory?

A citation is an online reference to a business that can be found in an online directory. Citations include important information about the business, including its name, address, phone number, and so on, so that it is easier for people to find your business.

But your business information alone isn’t the only information that makes your business easier to find. Other points of data, such as a website, photos, and videos, also play an important role in the citation.

Why Are Citations Important For Local SEO?

Citations help to improve the chances of your business being found online and to be found faster than competing, similar businesses. The more times your business is discovered on United Kingdom directories, the more chances your business has to become a popular search result on search engines, including Google. Becoming a top result on search result pages is key, as it results in an important factor known as prominence.

Search engines, especially Google, investigate information on a regular basis on the Internet. So, as long as your information matches what information is available on the Google Business profile, then this will allow Google to learn that your business is legitimate.

What To Consider When Creating Citations For Local Businesses In The UK?

When creating your business citations, there are a few factors to consider, especially since you will be creating citations to be discovered on multiple UK directories.

Consistency. Make sure that all information you provide in your citation matches the information on every other directory site that you are listed on. Data consistency is one key to creating a citation that will increase traffic and prominence.

Quality. All information listed should be relevant to your business. So, an United Kingdom located business should be listed on UK directory sites first. Listing your citations on other countries’ directory sites can be confusing to Google’s business algorithm, which wouldn’t improve your chances of being discovered first.

Quantity. There are many UK directories available today, but you do not need to list your business citation on every directory to be discovered more readily. You only need to list your citation on the top directories in the United Kingdom, which are included in the list below. Depending on your business type, listing your citation on a niche-specific directory can be helpful as well.

Do It For The Customer. When writing your citation, it is also important to keep the customer in mind. This is another reason to be consistent, as misleading or inconsistent information can decrease the trust potential customers will have in your business. Many people will check multiple directories for fact-checking purposes, so utilize your best photos, along with accurate information and strong business descriptions.

These days, the chances of a local business being found and converting online with no reviewers is like finding a needle in a haystack.

Reviews are, quite simply, essential for continued success and local business growth. They provide potential leads with written and external evidence about the quality of a business’ services.

It’s all well and good having an effective marketing strategy developed, informing consumers all about what you can offer and add to their lives. But, without reviews, your business will appear illegitimate to browsers – and your marketing efforts will be largely wasted.

When searching for a service/product online, we are all guilty of going straight to the reviews to see what other people say before deciding whether to part with our pennies.

For this reason, a business must build up its online reputation by devising and implementing a review acquisition and reputation management strategy. This essentially refers to how a company encourages reviews, their platforms to receive them, and how they respond to reviews.

To help you out, we look at how to identify people online from whom you would have a high chance of receiving a review and how to decide which review platforms to use.

Identifying valuable potential reviewers

Let’s start by identifying the right people you want to review your business’ product/service. If your local business deals with customers face-to-face, you likely have those loyal customers who return repeatedly and always leave happy with your level of customer service.

However, even today, not everyone is tech-savvy or has the time/patience to create an account online to leave a review. On top of this, review filters can filter out reviews left by one-off users of review platforms – annoying, we know. Google prefers to consider and showcase reviews left by people with regularly active Google+ or Yelp profiles.

Don’t let this stop you from encouraging your customers face-to-face to leave reviews, though, as the volume of reviews and review diversity are also essential in rankings!

Luckily, there are certain types of people out there who are more inclined to leave reviews. Understandably, though, they won’t always come to you, so it is up to you to find these people and get in touch!

How to find these reviews

How do you find these people amid the massive World Wide Web? There are a few simple methods. First, every central review platform will have elite accounts for your market in your more expansive area. For example, there will likely be a person near you who is the port of call for Google My Business (GMB) and Yelp – these people may be known as community managers or local representatives. To find these people near you, search for site:plus.google.com or title:” Google Local”.

You should consider which representative(s) are most relevant to your business in terms of their location and industry and identify their Twitter accounts. If the local representatives near you are irrelevant to your industry, this method may not work as effectively, so take the time to research.

Note:

The follower list of the Twitter accounts is a great place to start for discovering some active reviewers. If people are busy on a review site, they are likely to follow the closest representative to them for that given site. There is no harm in getting in touch with these people – you could offer them a deal for your product/service, hoping it will prompt some feedback!

Next, you should familiarise yourself with the precious online software Followerwonk, particularly its ‘compare users’ tool. You can compare the follower list of three Twitter handles, allowing you to identify any accounts that intersect and follow all three successfully. To get the absolute most out of this handy feature, we recommend comparing one or two of the previously identified review site representatives with your own handle or your competitors. This way, you can quickly pinpoint the people who would likely leave you a review!

“What now?” – you may be thinking. The next step is to connect with these people and try to build relationships. Before you can receive the reviews, you will need to provide the people with your service/product. If you do this effectively in a friendly yet professional manner, you will have reviews flooding in.

Identifying valuable review platforms

It is a common misconception that because businesses want to rank on Google search results, all their reviews should be left on Google itself (specifically Google My Business – GMB). However, this is not the case.

Google welcomes and actively encourages review diversity. As the saying goes, don’t put all your eggs in one basket – you are setting yourself up to fail. Having diverse reviews across several sites would be much more beneficial for your rankings than only having thoughts placed on one platform.

We recommend setting up profiles for your business on all the leading general review platforms, such as Google+, Yelp, CitySearch and Yahoo. Google likes strong brands, so your reviews will likely be considered legitimate if placed on these sites. Another benefit of accepting reviews on all major sites is that many allow the syndication of reviews across sites. For example, CitySearch syncs reviews with many other places – so you can ‘trick’ Google into thinking you have more reviews and improve your rankings! It’s a win-win.

As well as using all the major review platforms online, you should research and identify more relevant and specific sites. Google loves industry-focused review sites… and we are all striving to give Google what it wants. Choosing the right review platform(s) depends mainly on your business’ industry. Searching your ‘industry keyword_reviews’ is one way to identify some relevant sites. You can also look at the GMB listings of your competitors – their ‘more reviews’ section may signal which sites they use and which Google likes.

Top tip:

Whilst it is essential to spread your reviews across both general and industry-focused review sites, you should also share incoming positive thoughts on your site and social media accounts to give them a boost! This will benefit your rankings and showcase to people the excellent service you provide, hopefully increasing your conversion rates.

How can Bigfoot help?

Hopefully, you now feel more clued up on identifying the suitable types of people for leaving reviews and understand the importance of using multiple review platforms. To avoid bombarding you with information, stay tuned to receive more check-top tips – next time, the focus will be on acquiring reviews and responding to them effectively.

Optimising images for a website, in short, means adjusting the image size to Google’s webpage loading speed policy. However, in order for the image to maintain its quality and remain equally valid for both Google and the user, formatting is required.

In addition to quality text, the image is another mandatory factor of any quality communication with the user. Although marketing experts often stress that it’s better to stick to the living word, the image is something that remains in the user’s memory, sometimes leaving a much greater effect than the sound.

However, the rules of marketing are one thing, and Google’s rules are quite another. The speed of the website, more precisely, the speed of loading the content on it, is extremely important for SEO. The slower the content on the website is loaded, no matter how interesting it is, the user/reader probably won’t open it.

Website speed doesn’t only depend on the image size but also on web hosting. For example, by creating a MySQL hosting account on some of the numerous plans whose performances were tested and recommended, your website will be placed on speed optimised servers. This way, you’ll avoid page load delay that impacts SEO rankings and even impacts your bounce rate and conversion rate.

Google Optimisation Policy

Users of social networks and the new Internet generation have extremely sharpened senses for the quality and lasting of content. All marketing policies are user-friendly but all Google policies are user-friendly, too. You guessed it, none of that is in line with your own rules. So… as much as your image makes sense from an aesthetic and educational point of view, maybe you shouldn’t put it on your blog, because its size is, for example, as much as 600 kb. What does this mean now?

This means that if you have a lot of images, it’s very likely that the performance of the website will be impaired. And Google doesn’t like that. So a lot of images -> slow website loading -> Google is angry.

In case you try to please Google and do something like reducing the image format, and the image loses its quality and becomes blurry, we have the following situation: you change the image size -> the image is blurry -> Google is angry.

This frustration can be resolved, but with proven tactics and the support of certain programs.

Image Optimisation – Benefits

Nearly a quarter of the website’s “weight” is consisted of images, more precisely, 21 %. Furthermore, images make up 68% of the size of webpages sent to mobile phones. This should mean that the first thing you need to do is optimise the images. It’s not a difficult job at all, but ironically, the least time is spent on that part of the SEO process.

The benefits of image optimisation are:

● Improving page load speed
● Visibility in search engine results. Big images slow down a website, and Google hates slow websites
● Faster creation of backups
● Reducing image loading time
● Reducing space on your server. Large images require more server space, which costs more. And as far as we have seen, Google isn’t thrilled with the huge photos either.

Formatting, What Is It?

The primary goal of image formatting is to find a balance between image size and acceptable quality. You can do this in Adobe Photoshop or through WordPress plugins, some of which we’ll mention a bit later.
The two basic things to consider are the file format and the type of compression you use. By choosing the right combination of file format and compression type, you can reduce the image size by as much as 5 times. You definitely need to experiment with each image format to see what gives the most and the best results.

File Formats

Before you start editing your images, make sure to choose the best file type out of several most used:

● PNG – quality isn’t lost during compression, but the file size is larger
● JPEG – allows you to adjust the image according to the balance of image quality and size
● GIF – uses only 256 colours. It’s the best choice for animated images. It uses just compression without loss of quality.

There are several other formats, such as WebP, but they aren’t universally supported by all browsers. Ideally, you should use the JPEG (or JPG) format for multi-colour images and the PNG format for simpler images.

As it’s recommended that the weight of the website be up to 1 MB, large images shouldn’t be placed. However, the big image and the blurry image are equally unacceptable to Google.

What to do in this case? In front of you, there are three images: the first image has 356 kb, the second image has 40 kb, and the third image has 124 kb. What’s most acceptable for maintaining image quality? Well, option No. 3 because it retains the quality of the original image (No. 1) and, at the same time, is compressed to an acceptable weight, that is, the weight that Google accepts.

Compression With and Without Loss of Image Quality

In the previous case, we decided on the step of eliminating the image quality, more precisely, we chose the option to slightly impair the image quality in favour of reducing the size. But, we did so that the appearance of the image isn’t completely impaired, only to the extent that best suits the original image.

If the image quality is maintained, the image needs to be uncompressed until it’s displayed. This can be done in Photoshop and FileOptimiser. Many plugins support gzip compression on images (minimization). However, regardless of the compression tool used, it’s important to have the option to save the image for a web page (save for web) thus, obtaining optimal image compression.

Image compression programs that you can use are Adobe Photoshop, Affinity Photo, GIMP, Paint.NET, Gifsicle, FileOptimiser, TinyPNG, etc.

Does CSS Resize the Image?

If you use WordPress, your images will be reduced to a certain size for the WordPress library when uploading. To prevent CSS (language that’s quite often used in WordPress to add style and describe how HTML elements are to be displayed) from resizing an image, you need to make sure that the maximum width matches the width of your website.

WordPress offers the ability to place a small photo within a text, but let’s not forget that the original size of the image you uploaded hasn’t changed. If you want to resize images and save disk space by not storing the original one, you can use a free plugin called Insanity. It allows you to limit the image to normal size before it’s uploaded, more precisely, before it’s displayed in WordPress.

Of course, that’s why WordPress has designed plugins that will help you make this type of work easier, with our suggestion that, regardless of the recommended plugins, you compress the image in advance in accordance with the appropriate quality and size.

Plugins We Recommend

Imagify

Imagify has a complex optimisation where you can choose between three different compression levels: normal, strong, and ultrasound. It also has a restore function, so if you aren’t satisfied with the quality, you can click once to restore and re-compress at a level that better suits your needs. There’s a free version and a paid version. You are limited to a size of 25 MB of images per month with a free account.

WP Smush

WP Smush is compatible with some of the most popular media library plugins such as WP All Import and WPML. All image optimisations are done by lossless compression, which preserves the image quality. It doesn’t matter in which directory the images are stored as this plugin finds and compresses them quickly.

It will scan the images and compress them as they are uploaded to the library. It can compress up to 50 files at once and works with all file types. The file size is limited to 1 MB. Smush has the ability to automatically adjust the width and height for all images and, like all other plugins, it has a free and paid version.

TinyPNG

TinyPNG uses TinyJPG and TinyPNG files to optimise JPG and PNG images. This program will convert CMYK (four basic colours used for printing colour images) to RGB (red, green, blue) to save space. JPEG images will be captured up to 60 % while PNG images will be captured up to 80 % and, which is very important, no visible loss of image quality will occur. This plugin has no limit in file size.

As the digital world continues to be rocked by news of the Coronavirus outbreak, brands and marketers are facing tough decisions about their online presence and marketing budgets.

Some, like toilet roll manufacturers, find themselves in a position to support the public who are flocking to the shops to ‘panic buy’ essentials – if they can keep up with demand. Other sectors that stand to profit from the pandemic include health, fitness, technology and entertainment for obvious reasons.

But what about the rest? How will they cope? They will be experiencing a shocking decline in new business and dwindling profits as a result. Now, it would be easy to take one look at your outgoings, go into panic mode and switch off your marketing (like your competitors). However, smarter businesses will use this as an opportunity to get ahead.

This is how we see it – businesses have two options:

Option 1: Jump on the bandwagon and pause all digital marketing.
Option 2: Use this time to support your customers and increase brand loyalty.

You may be thinking “Sounds great, but how do I market my business at a time when the country has gone into lockdown?”

Here are just some of the ways that your business can utilise digital marketing to get ahead and support customers:

Digital marketing during the Coronavirus

1. Social media marketing

It’s hardly surprising that social media is at the top of this list. With everyone advised to stay at home, the number of people sat on their phones and scrolling through social media has skyrocketed. There has already been a 76% increase in daily likes on influencer ad posts (source).

Now is the time to let customers know that you are active and able to support them. All we see on our social media feeds is doom and gloom, ‘BREAKING’ news and scare tactics from the media during this already uncertain time. Be the one post that stands out from the crowd with a reassuring message. Consider how your product or service can benefit people at this time and adapt your marketing messages. For those who operate in the fitness industry, why not publish home workout videos? Local restaurants can share recipes and guides on healthy eating. Online home and garden brands can offer discounts on a range of essential products. Remember, this will not last forever. Those who continue to engage, excite and entertain customers, will be the ones who retain them long after this pandemic. You should be planning for an uplift in sales once this all subsides.

2. Google & social advertising

When business slows and sales take a hit, it’s natural for business owners to pause all advertising. After all, what’s the point in wasting money when no one is buying? That’s one view. And there’s another? Yes, because not all people are tightening their purse strings. For those who are ready to spend and continue life as normal, you should be putting your business in front of them. There has been a significant drop in companies advertising online, which has resulted in much lower CPCs and ad spend. If you are in a sector that will benefit from advertising at this time, then we urge you to do so.

Others who are not ready to purchase will do later down the line, and guess who they will approach? It will likely be the business they spent the pandemic hearing about who actively promoted their products. A lot of people are in the research stage of the customer journey because they physically can’t go out and buy from retailers. They will be looking for companies, like yours, who are selling online. Those who appear first are the ones who will generate the most impressions, clicks and, therefore, conversions.

3. YouTube

With YouTube having to reduce its streaming quality due to the spike in traffic and increased demand (source), it’s clear that video advertising is a smart digital marketing strategy. People are jumping to video for Coronavirus updates or seeking light entertainment to distract from the world around them. Either way, it doesn’t take a genius to conclude that YouTube ads are worth exploring.

What’s great about advertising on YouTube, especially at a time when people are making budget cuts, is that it’s dirt cheap. A typical video ad runs between £0.10 and £0.30 per view (source), depending on the video quality and targeting. What’s more, if people choose to skip the ad, then you won’t pay a penny. That’s free brand awareness.

4. SEO

SEO is a process that includes optimising a website to appear higher in the search results. For those who are familiar with SEO, you will understand that it takes time for results to kick in – unless your competitors pause their campaigns. This is happening to a lot of our clients who are now experiencing spikes in traffic. Now is not a time to throw in the metaphorical marketing towel. People are sat at home and searching for your services, so don’t give up. You should be using this time wisely to stabilise your position in the search results.

Benefits of continuing marketing through COVID-19

Get ahead of the competition

Never has there been a better time to get ahead of the competition. Think of it like a race. If all your competitors are sat on the sofa, failing to engage with their customers, then you’ll be running circles around them.

Target those who are buying

People are in front of their screens for long periods of time, so don’t miss the opportunity to target potential buyers who have all the time in the world to shop online.

Build relationships

Warm up leads in preparation for a surge of enquiries. There’s no time like the present to set up a sales funnel and benefit from nurturing leads and building trust. What else would you be doing? Switching off all forms of contact is not a smart move.

Set yourself up for post-pandemic success

This is possibly the most important benefit of them all. At some point, Coronavirus will pass. When that happens, do you want to be the business that struggles to secure sales and must start from scratch? Or do you want to be the business that has built a strategy focused on success now and in the future? Most business owners will prepare for the long-term, so don’t let Coronavirus get in the way of that positive mindset.

What help is available to businesses?

Now is not the time to shy away from digital marketing. We’re taking our advice and ramping up our most profitable marketing channels and supporting our clients through this tough time. If you want to retain customers and strengthen your business but don’t know how, don’t worry. That’s what our team is here for.

Did you know that Google makes thousands of changes to its search algorithms every year?

In June 2019, for example, the search engine giant revealed that it had made over 3,200 algorithm alterations in the previous twelve months. This equates to around 9 changes a day.

While it’s often said that the world of SEO is constantly evolving, figures like this make the extent of these changes clear. Given these developments, it’s vital that every business has an up-to-date SEO strategy that recognises the latest trends.

If you’re looking for future-proof optimisation that keeps you ahead of the curve, check out our predictions for the SEO trends that will dominate 2020.Contents:

1. Snippets and On-SERP SEO

2. Mobile-First Indexing

4. Videos

5. Voice Search

What are the top SEO trends for 2020?

1. Snippets and On-SERP SEO

Rich and featured snippets have been around for a while now, and both have resulted in considerable changes to Google’s SERP (that’s Search Engine Results Page).

In short, snippets are a type of Google search result that displays additional information about a page. When we refer to On-SERP SEO, it means providing content that is optimised for the changing layouts of a search engine’s results page.

While a standard Google search result will only include a page title, a meta description, and a URL, rich snippets provide greater detail. For example, a rich snippet for a recipe might also include the calorie count and the cooking time; for music, it might include the genre and release date; and for products, it might include a price or star rating.

Unlike rich snippets, which are simply search results with extra context, featured snippets appear at the top of the results page above the number one organic search result. Because of this, featured snippets are particularly useful for mobile users, who often need quick answers and aren’t always willing to scroll through results. They’re also the result that is most often relayed to voice searchers, with voice software usually providing just a single response to voice queries.

Google’s emphasis on snippets stems from its desire to provide searchers with what it calls ‘zero-click results’, which is when a user receives an immediate answer to their query rather than needing to click on a link. Given that featured snippets automatically take the top spot on Google’s SERP, they’re often highly competitive when it comes to rankings. Perhaps more pressingly for SEOs, however, the rise of featured snippets is pushing organic results further down the page.

While not strictly part of SEO, pay-per-click advertising (or PPC) is another marketing technique that needs to be factored into On-SERP SEO. As with snippets, PPC results appear at the top of the page above organic search results. You can distinguish them from organic results by the small ‘Ad’ label that appears to the left of the page’s URL.

With PPC results and featured snippets often appearing together above organic search, it’s clear that position one on Google isn’t necessarily as valuable as it used to be. After all, it’s possible that you could achieve position one only for your website to still appear over halfway down Google’s SERP.

While one way to combat this is to begin your own PPC campaign, this is by no means the only route towards sustaining high ranking positions. Luckily, SEO still has an important role to play!

When fine-tuning for the SEO trends of 2020, you’ll need to optimise content for snippets alongside using more traditional strategies to attract organic traffic. One way of doing this is by creating content that focuses less on including keyword phrases and more on answering a user’s queries. Try using a tool like AnswerThePublic to identify question-related keywords to target in headings and subheadings.

By producing content that offers concise answers to common questions, you’ll have a chance of taking those coveted featured snippet positions and gaining a significant number of clicks.

2. Mobile-First Indexing

Mobile optimisation has been an important Google search trend for years, but it’s now reached the stage where it’s an absolute necessity. Earlier this year, Google announced that all pages will be indexed using its ‘Mobile-First Index’, which means that it will access the mobile version of a page first when determining rankings.

Gone are the days when a mobile version was considered as a secondary alternative to a primary desktop page. To put it simply, Google is deprioritising desktop sites and considering mobile versions as the main pages of websites.

Because of this, it’s vital that mobile sites contain the same or equivalent content as their desktop counterparts. In the past, mobile sites sometimes contained reduced content to eliminate material that wasn’t optimised for mobile. With the advent of Mobile-First Indexing, omitting content is no longer the way to go.

If you don’t have a mobile site or if your mobile site is broken or incomplete, the desktop version will likely receive a ranking penalty. By the same token, if your mobile version is fully functional and engaging for users, your desktop version may receive a rankings push!

There are a few basic rules of thumb for mobile optimisation. For mobile-ready content, remember to limit paragraphs to two or three sentences, organise content with headings and subheadings, and use bullet points or lists where appropriate. For a mobile-ready user experience, creating clear navigation and ensuring rapid loading speeds are key.

If you’re already optimising for mobile, there’s a good chance that mobile-first indexing won’t have a significant effect on your SEO strategy. Nevertheless, it’s always worth using Google’s free checker to determine whether your site is optimised for mobile.

3. Visual Search

Previously considered an emerging technology, visual search has come on leaps and bounds in recent years. Within one year of launch, Pinterest Lens was already receiving more than 600 million visual search requests every month. By September 2019, Lens was able to identify more than 2.5 billion objects within the fashion and home industries.

It’s not just Pinterest that have got on board; services such as Google Lens and Bing Visual Search also allow users to upload an image to a search engine and receive a page of results.

By extending searches beyond the limitations of the written or spoken word, visual search opens up new possibilities for searchers. For example, a user could upload a photo of an item of clothing to receive styling tips, or a photo of an ingredient to explore recipe ideas. Most commonly, visual search is a way of allowing customers to find similar products based on something they already like. This makes it particularly useful for users searching for a very specific item, eliminating the difficulties of describing a unique version of a product using conventional text-based search.

An image-based approach to search creates new challenges and opportunities for SEOs. To make your site accessible to visual searchers, you need to take great care with your image SEO. Be sure to use descriptive, keyword-focused filenames, alt-text, captions, and tags, since SEO-friendly metadata will ensure Google can crawl your images successfully.

As well as including SEO-friendly metadata, it’s important to make effective use of images themselves. Always use relevant images that help contextualise your content, which is key to creating an engaging user experience. Aside from this, using unique images rather than stock photos will always give you an edge. Finally, there’s an important balancing act to consider in terms of image quality. Images need to be of sufficiently high quality to be read by visual search AI, but not so large as to impact on your site’s load times (using an image compressor is key!).

Visual search looks set to be one of the biggest SEO trends for 2020. By optimising your content with an eye for visual search, you’ll help your website gain a share of this new and rapidly expanding source of clicks.

4. Videos

Video marketing is an essential tool in any business’s arsenal. Cisco estimate that video will account for 82% of all web traffic by 2022, and when used correctly, videos can be an effective way to spread brand awareness and drive conversions.

With the increased pace of online browsing, some users don’t have time to consume lengthy blog posts. In this climate, incorporating video into your content is a great way to increase engagement.

While the main benefit of video is an enhanced user experience, videos also provide a direct ranking boost by increasing the amount of time a user spends on your page. Given the culture of sharing videos online, creating informative or educational videos within your niche can also be a way to encourage natural backlinks; even with the wealth of changes to SEO, these remain an essential ranking factor.

There are a few things to consider when optimising for video. Although Google’s AI can crawl a video file and extract data from its audio and video, it only gets a partial picture. This means that as with visual search, it’s important to optimise metadata using keyword-orientated titles and descriptions. Additionally, providing a transcription of a video will ensure you’re covering all the bases, allowing users to view content as traditional text if they prefer while guaranteeing content will be crawlable for search engines.

Take a look at Google’s Search Console for more advice on best practice, SEO-ready video.

5. Voice Search

Our final SEO trend for 2020 is something that’s been discussed frequently over recent years: voice search.

In 2016, Google revealed that 20% of mobile search queries were made using voice search. Other estimates suggest that 50% of all searches will be voice-based by 2020. With technology like Alexa, Google Assistant, Microsoft Cortana, and Siri increasingly a fixture in homes worldwide, talking now sits alongside typing as a viable way of conducting an online search.

Moving forward, voice search will become even more powerful because of its integration with things like snippets and mobile search. We talked above about optimising content for featured snippets by targeting common questions. Adapting for voice search is a key part of this, since voice searches are themselves predominantly question based.

By targeting long tail keywords made up of natural phrases that closely correspond with our everyday speech patterns, you’ll ensure your content mirrors the kind of language that forms a voice search. More specifically, creating a detailed FAQs page that is structured around long tail questions is a great way to target voice search and featured snippets simultaneously.

As the landscape continues to change, it’s likely that optimising for voice search will come to underpin every aspect of SEO strategy.

Adapting to SEO Trends for 2020

When looking to the future, one thing is clear: search engine optimisation remains in a constant state of flux.

With so many incredible platforms out there, it has never been easier to market your business online.

The problem is trying to manage, well… everything! You have multiple platforms for social media, emails, website building, and not forgetting, analytics.

A platform like Kajabi, though, allows you to market everything from one location.

SIGN UP TO KAJABI HERE!

Not only can you create a fantastic membership site, but you can market it and track all communications. There are very few limitations to the Kajabi platform except, perhaps, the cost involved.

The Kajabi pricing is a real sticking point for most business owners. They ask questions like “Why is the Kajabi pricing so high?” and “Do people actually see a return on investment?”

There are few platforms out there that rival Kajabi when it comes to value for money. Except perhaps Clickfunnels. We published an entire Kajabi vs Clickfunnels debate, so go check that out if you want an alternative.

We decided to create this Kajabi pricing review to help you decide if Kajabi is worth the investment, and which of the plans is the right one for you.

So, let’s get started…

Contents:

What is Kajabi?

Kajabi Pricing Overview

Is there a Kajabi Alternative?

Conclusion

What is Kajabi?

Kajabi is a web-based platform that allows you to build membership sites from scratch. You don’t need coding, creative content, or design experience. Kajabi is built with a complete novice marketer in mind.

Kajabi includes:

Website building tools

Blogging tools

Email marketing

Remarketing automation

Private community area

Built-in video streaming

Analytics

Before we dive into the finer details of this Kajabi pricing review, we’d like to be the first to praise this platform. It’s the absolute best software out there for selling online courses. It gives you everything you need to promote your services and expertise. It’s also considered the best ‘all-in-one’ app for email marketing, website building, promotion, and payment processing.

Say goodbye to the crazy overwhelm that comes with building a website with 80+ plugins, coding, and complex builders. The simple Kajabi drag and drop editor offers even the biggest technophobe a solution to online success.

But what should you do if you already have a website? Don’t throw in the towel in favour of Kajabi. The more active revenue streams you have, the better. Having both Kajabi and a website opens up the opportunity to bring in money from multiple traffic sources.

Kajabi Pricing Overview

There are three main Kajabi pricing plans available, so the question of “How much does Kajabi cost?” will come down to the plan you select. For most, the Basic Plan is all that is needed. It comes with most of the same features as the Growth Plan and Pro Plan, including video streaming, website builder, community support, etc.

– Basic Plan – $149/month ($119/month paid annually)
– Growth Plan – $199/month ($159/month paid annually)
– Pro Plan – $399/month ($319/month paid annually)

It’s also important to note that there is no additional pricing with any of the above plans. Some other popular online course platforms include transaction fees, which is not the case with Kajabi. All Kajabi pricing is listed in on the pricing page – there are no hidden fees left to surprise you once you sign up.

So, let’s dig deeper into the Kajabi pricing plans and what they have to offer. The Basic Plan is certainly the option to go for if you’re new to the platform. It comes with unlimited video hosting, themes, email marketing, website building, and a sales funnel builder.

The Growth Plan is, as expected, the way to go for those looking to scale things up! If you’re looking for an additional revenue stream (and have the time to spare!), then this is the plan for you. It allows for three new features – Affiliate Marketing, Automations, and White Labelling.

Automation does what it says on the tin. It allows you to automate certain marketing actions, like rewarding people with coupons, and sending alerts or emails based on actions taken within the hub. It can be used to upsell to people and encourage them to engage with your content.

Affiliate marketing, in the right hands, is incredibly powerful. If you have used Kajabi and have found it rewarding, why not market it? You will earn a 30% lifetime commission for every sale you make if people buy through your affiliate link. That’s pure profit for your business without having to lift a finger.

Another big difference between the two plans is customer support. While the Basic Plan allows you to benefit from support between the hours of 9-7, Monday-Thursday, the Growth Plan upgrades you to around the clock support. No matter what time of the day or night, you can send Kajabi a message and expect a response.

Because Kajabi is a membership site, the features don’t differ much between plans. However, what does differ between Kajabi pricing plans is the number of active users, sales pipelines, members, and contacts you can bolt on.

Ultimately, a membership with more users will appear more popular, will grow at a faster rate, and therefore, will require an upgraded plan.

The Basic Plan allows for 3 digital products and 3 sales pipelines, and maintains up to 1,000 active members and 10,000 contacts.

The Growth Plan allows significantly more room for ‘growth.’ You can create 15 digital products and 15 sales pipelines, and have up to 10,000 members and 25,000 contacts.

Upgrade to the Pro Plan and you’ll be rewarded with a whopping 100 digital products and 100 sales pipelines, while keeping 100,000 contacts and 20,000 members. The Pro Plan also allows you to create 3 websites instead of 1 like the Basic Plan and Growth Plan.

Is there a Kajabi Alternative?

If you’re thinking, surely there is a Kajabi alternative, well there certainly is. However, Kajabi pricing compared to the alternative is much kinder to your purse strings.

If you’ve heard of Clickfunnels, then you will understand exactly what we’re talking about. We are proud users of both the Kajabi and Clickfunnels software and would recommend them both… but for very different reasons.

Clickfunnels is great if you’re looking for a location to sell products. Kajabi is great if you’re all about knowledge sharing and brand reputation.

Clickfunnels pricing starts from $97/month. With the Starter Pack, you’ll get access to the funnel builder, which allows you to build attractive landing pages. However, to access the email marketing service, you’ll need to upgrade to Actionetics, which costs $297/month.

Clickfunnels is geared towards the promotion and sales of products. It comes with a unique set of high-converting sales page templates, training resources, and support. Kajabi is much the same with support offered, but instead of products, it’s a knowledge base.

So, the answer to the Kajabi pricing debate will depend on your business type. If you require a platform that will automate your entire marketing from sign-ups to sales, then Kajabi is the one for you.
